Ricardo Islas

Islas grew up in Calexico, a bordertown just 60 miles East of San Diego. His work is rich with historical and contemporary references, focusing on the working class and social issues of the mexician culture that spans the two countries which meet at this pivotal point. Inspired by Orozco, Kahlo and Goya, as well as the politics and angst of the "punk" movement, his work is personal, emotionally raw, and complex. His startk depictions of rural and urban societies, reflect the dual realities in contemporary life. Balancing indigeounous ritual with the harsh and oppressive conditions of survival, Islas interprets his scenes through folk art styles and surrealism. www.ricardoislas.com
